Based on the hugely successful model of London Academy of Excellence Stratford, which was named by the Sunday Times as State Sixth Form College of the Year in 2016, LAE Tottenham is an academically selective 16-19 free school supported by business and a number of independent schools.
The Academy’s principal education sponsor is nearby Highgate School, with Tottenham Hotspur Football Club acting as the business sponsor.
Nine other independent schools, including John Lyon, are in partnership with the Academy, offering time and expertise in a range of areas, including with university application and interview preparation, and in helping to develop the social capital of students.
The partnership, which began in late 2017, is still in development and work to define the precise relationship between LAE Tottenham and John Lyon is ongoing, with the goal of providing a programme of events and expertise that benefits all students.
The ethos and aims of LAE Tottenham are very much in line with those of John Lyon, specifically being centred on an academically rigorous curriculum, providing extensive opportunities for student enrichment through sport, clubs and societies, and a focus on giving back to the local community.
The importance of the partnership to John Lyon is reflected in the appointment of a senior member of teaching staff to lead the partnership effort. The aim is to make it the centrepiece of a wide-ranging programme of public benefit work led by the School, which includes work in the community, charitable work and fee assistance for local pupils.
